Book Reviews: The 4-Hour Work Week

The 4-Hour Work Week. By Timothy Ferris. This books claims to be able to guide through the process of whittling your work week down to 4 hours by becoming more efficient in the office, and creating mobility for yourself. This is accomplished by selling a product online that requires little to no management and then playing off the proceeds.

Who will benefit most from reading this book: Anyone who works 40-80 hours/week an an office/cubicle, preferably an investment banker or some office worker in another business related field. This person should be singe (with no intent of expanding his/her family any time soon), young (the author was under 30 when the book was written), well educated and committed to learning (the author speaks 7 languages and graduated from Princeton). Most importantly this person should want to quit their job (opting instead to sell a product online), love taking big risks, want to spend most of their time living outside the U.S. and like to work very, very hard.

How the rest of us can benfit: There is some really good advice about how to be more efficient at work and make yourself valuable to the company. While the author advocates using unethical behavior to distance yourself from your employer, he also gives good tips about making yourself indispensable. The beginning of the book has some wonderful insights into why we work so hard and how to get more out of life. I listened to the 2nd CD multiple times thinking about "dreamscapes" and how to have some of my dreams come true in the near future instead of waiting until retirement.
